What is BIM Level 3 ?
What is BIM Level 3 ?
- Level 3 proposes the use of an integrated solution built around open standards like IFC where a single server stores all the project data.
- One of the main requirements for BIM Level 3 is the availability (and implementation) of an international set of standards.
- Another key requirement to deliver BIM Level 3 projects is the use of IFC models.
- Its aim is to describe Architectural, Engineering and Construction data in a common format. It is an open file format specification that is not controlled by a single vendor.
- BIM Level 2 was about processes, whilst BIM Level 3 requires fundamental changes in the way we communicate at work.
Proper implementation and adoption of Level 3 require :-
- Development of a fresh ‘Open Data’ standard that facilitates the sharing of project data around the globe.
- Creation of new contractual frameworks for BIM-based projects for promoting collaboration and ensuring consistency.
- Training clients in the public sector to use BIM techniques, etc.
"Level 2 was deterministic in nature, Level 3 is more real time and probabilistic."
